The Work We Do

98% of all money we raise is awarded in grants

Since it started in 1981, DAT has helped over 4,000 people with disabilities to take a break, in many cases allowing the permanent carer the benefit of much needed, if short, relief from those they care for every day. Here are just a few examples of the people DAT has been able to help since 1981.

• Pamela contacted DAT to request help for her to travel with her choir to a Festival. Although multiple sclerosis has now confined her to a wheelchair, she was determined to travel to the festival with the choir. Her grant allowed her to have a helper on the holiday without which she would not have been able to take part.

• With the aid of a substantial donation toward the cost of volunteer helpers, 17 members of a support society with a wide range of disabilities, including Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome and Muscular Dystrophy thoroughly enjoyed their group holiday to an activity centre in England, providing many members with the opportunity to take part in supervised independent sporting activities they had not had the opportunity to enjoy before. These experiences greatly enhanced their independence and self esteem.

• Kevin suffered a bi-lateral leg amputation and brain damage as a result of an accident, the award from DAT enabled him to go on a holiday with a carer, giving his wife respite from the 24hr constant care she provides for her husband. These breaks can bring confidence, friendship and independence to a disabled person and the benefits to them and their families can be long lasting.
